My interests in scoring music to movement, as well as the rich history of the rural coastal town of Broome in Western Australia, led me to writing the piece BROOME WE ARE HERE.
In 2013 my brother-in-law, Bena Otieno Wandei, was involved in a short film as part of a community arts project called Broome We Are Here. It combined digital story-telling and performance to tell the unique stories of elders from the area. It was created by the organization Burdekin - Youth in Action, and was facilitated by Mayu Kanamori and Richard Mayhew.
This film footage includes a beautiful account of hearing-impaired, Indigenous Australian Dicki Chi and his work within the Pearl diving industry, which was dangerous, hard work. I was inspired to write this piece to accompany his hand movements as he communicated through sign-language to tell his story. The community project itself Broome We Are Here was created to “acknowledge and pay respect to the elders both past and present, on whose land we hold our project.”
Broome is a special place to me that is so unique and rich in local history and cultural diversity. Broome was also one of the few places in Australia that did not adhere to the “White Australia” Immigration policy of 1901. This was because Asian immigrants and indentured servants were needed to provide cheap labor within the Pearling industry.
