about

LILAC CHASER is a piece inspired by the late pianist/composer Andrew Hill and his recordings with string quartet, such as Poinsettia and Illusion, from his Blue Note album One for One. Lilac Chaser is an optical illusion, created by Jeremy Hinton in the early 2000’s. It incorporates 12 evenly spaced, blurry, lilac colored dots in a circle on a grey background with a black cross in the center of the circle. One at a time, each of these dots, disappear and reappear briefly in a clockwise motion, appearing as if a missing space is moving clockwise through the circle. As this happens, and the eyes are fixated on the center cross, the missing space will appear to be substituted with a green dot, until finally the image appears to be one
green dot in orbit. The anchoring bass notes in the opening are Eb and Ab, are notes I associate with the colors of green and purple respectively.
